Folate deficiency would result in abnormal embryonic development, leading to adverse pregnancy outcomes. The underlying mechanisms remain to be comprehensively investigated. As a methyl donor, folate could chemically change the DNA methylation level in genome sequences. Thus, we proposed that folate deficiency impairs embryonic development by altering the methylation profiles of corresponding genes.
