CheckIn Higher Education Instrument: Dataset of Portuguese Professors (2023-2024)

This dataset comprises the responses of 683 higher education professors from Portugal, collected online between November 8, 2023, and January 31, 2024. The data was gathered using the Portuguese adaptation of the Check-In Higher Education self-assessment questionnaire, a 25-item instrument designed to profile teachers' digital competence. The questionnaire is theoretically grounded in two European reference frameworks: DigCompEdu and OpenEdu. It evaluates seven conceptual domains: Professional Engagement, Digital Resources, Teaching and Learning, Assessment, Empowering Learners, Facilitating Learners' Digital Competence, and Open Education. Each item is scored on a progressive scale reflecting the complexity of the digital practices involved.The dataset contains a rich set of variables that enable diverse statistical analyses, encompassing personal dimensions (such as gender, age, and academic degree), teaching dimensions (including teaching cycle, teaching modality, and experience with technologies), and institutional dimensions (such as university or polytechnic subsystems, and public or private establishments). Furthermore, it provides detailed scores for each of the 25 items, aggregated scores per domain, and the respondents' overall proficiency classification on a progressive six-level scale ranging from A1 (Newcomer) to C2 (Pioneer).Empirically, this dataset underpins two major scientific contributions. Through confirmatory structural equation modeling (SEM) and multigroup analyses, this study confirmed the instrument's robust seven-factor structure, internal consistency, and measurement invariance across gender and teaching experience, establishing it as a highly reliable tool for assessing teacher digital competence in higher education.
