Biosolids and Industrial Field Activity

This dataset contains records of land application activities for biosolids and industrial residuals on permitted sites in Virginia. The purpose of this dataset is to make information about biosolids and industrial residual land application more accessible to the public and to support accountability, environmental review, and informed decision-making. It provides a clear record of permitted land application activities and helps citizens, regulators, and other interested parties understand the history and scope of these practices in Virginia. The dataset includes information on land application events reported by permittees through monthly submissions to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Each record represents a specific application event and includes details such as permit number, city or county, DEQ control number, application date, source or storage facility, acres applied, application method, percent solids, amount applied, units, dry tons applied, and the crop planned for nutrient uptake. The data is organized to show application activity by field, date, and source within each control number. To learn more about DEQ's Biosolids program click here. Permittees submit these application reports to DEQ no later than the 15th of each month proceeding the land application month. The submittals are reviewed and uploaded into the DEQ database. The dataset covers land application activity from 2017 to the present, based on the most recent monthly reporting submissions. For permits that are required to submit land application activity reports, data is considered complete from 2018 onward. Data from 2008 through 2017 is available upon request, and records prior to 2008 are maintained only in paper format.
