This dataset is the India State of Forest Report 2021, which is updated every two years. The Forest Survey of India (FSI) is the premier national organization under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The National Commission on Agriculture (NCA) recommended in its 1976 report to establish a national forest survey institution to conduct regular and comprehensive forest resource surveys across the country, which ultimately led to the founding of FSI. Established on June 1, 1981, FSI was launched as a follow-up project to the "Pre-Investment Survey of Forest Resources" (PISFR) initiated by the Government of India in 1965 with sponsorship from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Its core objectives include regularly monitoring changes in land and forest resources, releasing national planning data, as well as advancing resource conservation and environmental protection.
