European Mortality from Eurostat

This dataset consists of a collection of separate files retrieved from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, as part of the GeoAI4EI project. The files contain statistical data on mortality across European countries, providing information on deaths and causes of death. Mortality data are essential for monitoring population health, identifying major causes of death, assessing geographical and temporal variations in mortality patterns, and supporting epidemiological analyses. The dataset covers different aspects of mortality, including: Causes of death: mortality statistics classified according to the underlying cause of death, based on the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD). Mortality by demographic characteristics: data disaggregated by age group and sex, where available. Standardised death rates: mortality indicators adjusted for differences in the age structure of populations, allowing comparisons across countries and regions. Geographical distribution of mortality: data on deaths and mortality rates at national and, where available, regional levels. Specific causes of death: mortality data related to selected diseases and conditions, including infectious diseases and other causes relevant to public health. Temporal and geographic coverage The dataset covers European countries, with geographical coverage varying according to data availability in the individual Eurostat databases. Data are primarily provided at the national level, while regional breakdowns are also available in some datasets according to the NUTS classification. Temporal coverage varies across the individual files, with some time series extending up to 2025. The availability of demographic, geographical, and cause-specific breakdowns may differ between datasets, reflecting national reporting practices and data availability. All files are provided separately and have been preserved in their original downloaded format, without modifications, processing, or harmonization. The original data and associated metadata are available through the Eurostat database (https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat). This collection is intended to support comparative analyses of mortality patterns, causes of death, and geographical and temporal variations in population health across European countries and regions. It may also contribute to the assessment of the public health impact of diseases and the identification of mortality patterns associated with public health emergencies, including pandemics.
