L. fermentum KUB-D18 was isolated from the gut of a chicken in our laboratory. Furthermore, laboratory fermentations revealed that this strain can produce bile salt hydrolase (BSH) enzyme, which promotes bile salt deconjugation and cholesterol assimilation, resulting in an increase in cholesterol utilization, implying that it could be used as probiotic food supplements to control cholesterol and develop a potential biotherapeutic agent for hypercholesterolemia.
