He is wearing the dark robes of a Franciscan monk and is mostly bald, except for small tufts of hair around his head. Serra was born on the island of Mallorca on November 24, 1713, and died at Mission San Carlos de Monterey on August 28, 1784. This portrait is from a painting formerly in the College of San Fernando in the City of Mexico, painted in 1773.
