The flow stress curves of Mg-5Sm-3Gd solid solution treated magnesium alloy were obtained by using a Gleeble-1500 thermal simulator. A constitutive equation of the alloy was established and verified by using peak stress method, and the thermal processing map was analyzed for the most suitable working area. The results show that the flow stress increases with decrease of deformation temperature (from 500 ℃ to 350 ℃) or increase of strain rate (from 0.01 s-1 to 1 s-1). Experimental comparisons and validations have confirmed that the rheological stress predicted by this equation demonstrates high accuracy, with an average relative error within 1. 88% and a correlation coefficient of 0. 99. The alloy exhibits an energy dissipation efficiency exceeding 30% and no flow instability within the temperature range of 440 ℃ to 500 ℃ and strain rate range of 0.01 s-1 to 0.05 s-1, indicating its suitability for thermal processing.
