To collect this data, an Internet-wide IP address sweep was conducted. Every IP address in the ranges allocated by IANA was pinged once by sending ICMP ECHO_REQUEST (PING) packet. If the response (ICMP_ECHO_REPLY) came, its IP address was recorded in this data-set. In all, over 2.5 billion distinct IP addresses were probed during this experiment.为采集本数据集，研究人员开展了一次全球范围的IP地址扫描行动。针对互联网编号分配机构（Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, IANA）分配的全部IP地址段内的每个IP地址，均通过发送网际控制报文协议回显请求（ICMP ECHO_REQUEST，即PING）数据包完成一次Ping探测。若该IP地址返回了网际控制报文协议回显应答（ICMP_ECHO_REPLY）数据包，则将其IP地址收录至本数据集。本次实验中共探测了超过25亿个唯一IP地址。
