To comprehensively investigate the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of tritium in the North Pacific Ocean, we compiled an extensive dataset comprising approximately 708,000 seawater tritium measurements from multiple authoritative sources. These include the Global Ocean Data Analysis Project (GLODAP, 2019), Data Publisher for Earth & Environmental Science (PANGAEA) (OMS, 2018), Clivar and Carbon Hydrographic Data Office (CCHDO, 2024), IAEA MARIS (IAEA, 2024), Ocean Data View (Jenkins et al., 2019), and the Overarching Radiation-monitoring Data Browsing System in the Coastal Ocean of Japan (ORBS) (TEPCO, 2024a). Furthermore, we supplemented this dataset with approximately 8,600 tritium measurements extracted from 11 peer-reviewed publications (Kaizer et al., 2020; Kim et al., 1997; Watanabe et al., 1991; Ohtsuki et al., 2023; Shozugawa et al., 2016; Povinec et al., 2017; Blaauea, 1977; Jenkins et al., 2023; Ueda et al., 2005; Landa et al., 1999; Kondo et al., 2004).
The data processing and quality control procedures were implemented through a systematic three-stage approach. Initially, we screened and selected valid tritium measurements based on non-negative activity concentrations within the geographical boundaries of the North Pacific Ocean. Subsequently, we standardized the dataset with respect to temporal and spatial parameters, including sampling time, latitude, longitude, depth, and tritium concentration. Specifically, seawater pressure measurements were converted to depth values, and all tritium concentration units were standardized to Bq/m³. Finally, we applied rigorous screening criteria based on five key parameters: sampling time, geographical coordinates (longitude and latitude), station location, and tritium concentration. Measurements were considered duplicates and subsequently removed if all these parameters were identical.
Following this comprehensive data processing protocol, we obtained a refined dataset containing 24,118 validated tritium measurements spanning from 1952 to 2024. It is important to note that all tritium concentrations in this dataset represent the measured activity at the time of sampling, without any decay correction applied. This approach ensures the preservation of original measurement integrity while providing a robust foundation for spatiotemporal analysis of tritium distribution patterns in the North Pacific Ocean.
