Automated detection of river mouth opening and closure using cloud-based processing of Sentinel-2 imagery

Short description We developed an automated index-based satellite workflow to detect the connectivity between river mouths and the ocean. The framework was applied on the Western Mediterranean basin over 30 river elements using the entire Sentinel-2 database available (2017-2025), extracting timeseries of river mouth state (open/close) for each element. The code was developed on the Google Earth Engine platform using the python API, which makes it suitable for the spatial-temporal scale of the study. File Structure Intermittent_river_mouths.zip||----- data|----- Results|----- Scripts Key Features: Scripts: The main code for execution of GEE-integrated python algorithm for river mouth state extraction. A GEE account is required data: Geographical information for rivers used in the study. This dataset should be uploaded as an asset on the GEE platform. For use on other datasets, similar geofiles should be uploaded. Results: Complete timeseries of river mouth states used on the study
