THE ROLE OF AUTHENTIC CULTURAL MATERIALS (FILMS, LITERATURE, NEWS ARTICLES) IN FOSTERING INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE AMONG EFL LEARNERS

In the context of global interconnectedness, English language education increasingly requires learners to develop not only linguistic proficiency but also intercultural communicative competence (ICC). This article examines the role of authentic cultural materials—including films, literary texts, and news articles—in fostering ICC among EFL learners. Adopting a qualitative descriptive and conceptual approach, the study analyzes these materials through established ICC frameworks, focusing on their potential to enhance cultural awareness, interpretive and reflective skills, and critical cultural understanding. The analysis indicates that authentic materials provide learners with meaningful, contextually rich exposure to social norms, communicative behaviors, and diverse cultural perspectives, promoting engagement that extends beyond traditional textbook learning. The findings underscore the pedagogical value of integrating authentic materials into EFL instruction, highlighting their capacity to transform language learning into a reflective, culturally responsive experience. Implications for teaching practice and suggestions for future research are discussed.
