Dolichopodidae: The Long-Legged Flies of Hawai'i VIII

This family of true flies is large and cosmopolitan, meaning they are widespread and can be found in numerous places around the world. There are about 230 genera with 7,000 known, described species. Dolichopodidae flies often vary in color, but usually carry a metallic appearance. They are small with large, conspicuous eyes, and most of them have long legs. The male genitalia is another notable feature, as they are unusually large and can serve as an identifying feature for different species. Please contribute and help transcribe the UHIM's specimens in order to better our understanding of their distribution here in Hawai'i.This expedition of 753 tasks is fully transcribed and validated. This data resource is harvested periodically into the main occurrence index.
