Elsabreen and Ferdinandbreen, Petuniabukta Glacier dhdt_LIA-2024_McCerery_2025

This is a dataset of Elasbreen and Ferdinandbreen, Svalbard glacier volume from the Little Ice Age (LIA) to 2024. Methods for aerial extents in: McCerery et al. (2025) 'Retreat and volume loss of two rapidly vanishing Svalbard glaciers since 1938: Elsabreen and Ferdinandbreen, Petuniabukta' To estimate glacier volume change we examined DEMs generated from optical stereo images acquired during regional aerial photography surveys and by contemporary satellites. The earliest DEM in our time series is that generated by Geyman and others (2022) who reconstructed surface elevations across Svalbard from oblique image surveys conducted in 1936 and 1938, the latter of which covers the area around Ferdinandbreen and Elsabreen. We also use DEMs generated from vertical aerial photographs acquired in 1990 and 2009 by the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) and we incorporate two ArcticDEM strips (Porter and others, 2022) generated from images acquired on 06/05/2013 and 19/05/2023 by the Worldview 2/3 satellites: (SETSM_s2s041_WV01_20130506_102001001F6FF500_1020010020127100_2m_lsf_seg1 and SETSM_s2s041_WV02_20230519_10300100E7037200_10300100E854C400_2m_seg1, respectively).
