Purple microbial (Photo- and chemosynthetic) mats are found in Middle Island Sinkhole, a low-oxygen/high-sulfur submerged sinkhole in Lake Huron, MI. Cyanobacteria in the mats are capable of anoxygenic photosynthesis as well as oxygenic photosynthesis. The microbial mat and sediment microbial communities interact through the sulfur and oxygen cycle. These communities are distinctly different in composition and function from surrounding Lake Huron sediment.
