Steam and air conditioning supply in Europe’s revenue is expected to contract at a compound annual rate of 0.3% to €79.8 billion over the five years through 2024. Private households use heating and cooling primarily for indoor heating and air conditioning, while commercial customers also use steam, hot and chilled water and cooled air to support production processes and as input factors. Revenue depends on the supply needs of residential and commercial customers, which is largely dictated by the weather. A hotter summer can hike demand for air conditioning, while colder winters encourage people to pop the heating on. Urbanisation levels, demand from the manufacturing sector and the number of households connected to district heating and cooling networks all send waves through demand. The Russia-Ukraine conflict has had a major impact on the industry as it sent the price of natural gas – a key energy source for heating and cooling – soaring since many European companies were cut off from their key Russian suppliers. Industry revenue is rising by an estimated 0.7% in 2024 as the supply of gas alternatives has improved, easing commodity markets.
