Group Members: Pham, Anisa, and Sajid Introduction: The objective was to collect measurements for the width of both the adult tree and sapling at our breast height, the distance between both trees, and the percentage canopy coverage. Materials: The materials we used were two transects, paper to record data, and pencil/pen to write down information. One transect was used to measure the distance between both the adult tree and the sapling starting from both the trees backs, and the other transect was used to measure the width of the tree from our breast height. This way, the process would go by faster. Site Information: The data was collected at the York University Danby Woods near the northeastern side of the campus. The temperature was hot that day and the climate was very sunny. However, it was a little cooler in the woodlands because the trees served as a shading spot for us. There were many trees of various ages growing in the woodlands, and no animals present at the time. Method: The experiment was carried out by us choosing which species of trees available to take measurements for. All of us decided to find and measure the maple trees, since there was an abundant amount of them in the woodlands. Then, we split into two groups. One group was to measure the distance between the adult maple tree and its sapling and the other group was responsible for measuring the distance from breast height on both the adult and sapling trees as well as visually estimating the percentage canopy coverage of the adult trees. The distance between the two trees was measured by using a transect and recording the distance starting and ending from both trees' backs. The distance to breast height was measured by using one of our group members as a reference point and measuring the width of the tree at their breast height. If the sapling was too small (around the height of our foot), we would take a measurement at foot height. We visually estimated the percentage coverage by making a square shape with our index fingers and thumbs and looked at how much of the sky was covered by the tree’s leaves. By splitting into groups, we saved time and finished earlier.

小组成员:Pham、Anisa与Sajid 引言:本次实验的目标为采集三类测量数据:成年树木与幼树的胸高(breast height)处树干宽度、两棵树木之间的间距,以及成年树木的树冠覆盖率百分比。 实验器材:本次实验所用器材包括两条样带(transect)、用于记录数据的纸张,以及用于书写的铅笔或钢笔。其中一条样带用于测量成年树与幼树之间的间距,测量起点为两棵树的树干基部;另一条样带则用于测量树木胸高处的宽度,以此提升测量效率。 采样地点:数据采集于约克大学(York University)丹比林区(Danby Woods)校园东北侧区域。当日气温偏高,天气晴朗,但林区内因树木遮阴相对凉爽。林区内生长着众多不同树龄的树木,当日未观测到动物活动。 实验方法:本次实验首先由小组成员选定待测树木种类,全员一致选择枫树进行测量,因林区内枫树分布较为丰富。随后我们分为两组开展工作:一组负责测量成年枫树与其幼树之间的间距,以两棵树的树干基部为起止点,通过样带读取间距数值;另一组则负责测量成年树与幼树的胸高处宽度,同时对成年树的树冠覆盖率百分比进行目视估算。胸高处宽度的测量以一名小组成员的身高作为参照基准,测量其胸高处的树干宽度;若幼树过小(高度约与脚踝平齐),则改为测量其脚踝高度处的宽度。树冠覆盖率百分比的目视估算方法为:用食指与拇指组成正方形框,观察该框内天空被树叶覆盖的比例。通过分组协作,我们节省了时间并提前完成了全部测量工作。
