In the chronically infected habitat of the cystic fibrosis (CF) lung, an environment-specific transcriptional profile is produced, that reflects a plastic bacterial response to the challenging conditions. Previous studies have demonstrated that Pseudomonas aeruginosa exhibits substantial genetic diversification in diverse sub-compartments of the CF lung. This study aimed to show that despite genetic compartmentalization the in vivo transcriptional profile is not significantly different between P. aeruginosa populations inhabiting the upper and lower, central or peripheral sub-compartments of the CF lung and that this is due to a plastic response that aids the maintenance of genetic diversity by dampening the selection force.
