Archeological Investigations Related to Fort Larned NHS Refrigerant Line Replacement and Officers' Cellars Stabilization

Archeological testing and mitigation was performed for two projects at Fort Larned National Historic Site. The first project consisted of relocating a buried air conditioner refrigerant line that passed through the 1860 adobe Commissary Storehouse and Enlistedmens' Barracks (HSll) and near a feature (Feature 17) previously identified by Earl Monger as a possible privy pit. The second project entailed testing in cellars located under the Officers Quarters (north cellar, HS7 and north and south cellars, HS9) to determine if any floor features were still present. The excavations in the Officers' Quarters revealed no cultural features or period artifacts. The work along the air conditioner line confirmed that the HS 11 foundations were damaged during the old sewer line installation. However, this work documents the fill sequence and the remaining foundation condition. The Feature 17 locale was investigated and found to be modern iron and other debris. The sheet trash, dating to the farm period occupation, is scattered over a fairly large area, but no formal trash deposit exists in the area. Front end loader stripping work proved that no buried latrine or other cultural feature exists in this area. A previously noted magnetic was identified as near surface substantial iron artifacts. As long as the air conditioner line replacement follows the existing alignment no further damage is likely to occur in HS 11. The area north ofRS 11 appears to have no cultural features and trenching in this area is not expect to affect any buried cultural resources.针对拉恩德堡国家历史遗址（Fort Larned National Historic Site）的两项工程开展了考古勘查与文物保护处置工作。第一项工程为迁移一处埋地空调冷媒管线，该管线途经1860年建造的土坯食品仓库与士兵营房（HS11），且紧邻厄尔·蒙杰（Earl Monger）此前认定的疑似厕所坑遗存（17号遗存）。第二项工程为对军官宿舍地下的地窖开展勘查：其中军官宿舍（HS7）北侧地窖，以及军官宿舍（HS9）南北两侧地窖，旨在确认是否仍存有地面遗存。军官宿舍区域的发掘未发现任何文化遗存或同期人工制品。空调管线沿线的勘查工作证实，HS11的地基在早期污水管线安装过程中已遭破坏，但本次工作明确了该区域的填土序列与现存地基状况。对17号遗存区域的勘查结果显示，此处仅存现代铁器与其他杂物。农场运营时期的零散垃圾散布于较大范围区域内，但未发现正式的垃圾堆积层。前端装载机表层剥离作业证实，该区域不存在埋地厕所或其他文化遗存。此前记录的磁异常被证实为近地表的大型铁质人工制品。若空调管线更换工程遵循现有管线走向，则HS11区域不会再遭受进一步破坏。RS11北侧区域未发现文化遗存，在此区域开展的探沟作业不会对埋地文化资源造成影响。
