NCC Aerial 1999-2010 Kelp Persistence Classification

This Adobe Acrobat (.PDF) Map Book contains a set of reduced-resolution snapshots of a kelp persistence analysis developed for the Sea Grant MPA Baseline Program as part of the project “High Resolution Nearshore Substrate Mapping and Persistence with Multispectral Aerial Imagery” (#R/MPA17 09-015). The study region is the California North Central Coast (NCC). This dataset is a thematic classification of kelp persistence between the years of 1999-2010 along California North Central Coast’s intertidal to offshore region from Pigeon Point up to Point Arena. In that time period, kelp maps from 2000, 2001, 2007 and 2009 were unavailable and so the persistence analysis was created using data from the eight years 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2010.The imagery used for this habitat classification were collected by Ocean Imaging (OI), Fugro EarthData and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). Details on the data sources and processing are below in the Lineage section of this document. Kelp classifications in the form of ESRI shapefiles were acquired from the CDFW for the years of 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008. For the 2010 kelp classification used in this analysis Fugro EarthData acquired the imagery between 09/22/2010 – 09/23/2010 and OI acquired this imagery on 11/02/2010 using the Digital Multispectral Camera (DMSC). The kelp presence for each available year were summed together for every 2 meter cell in the study region thus creating eight classes of annual kelp persistence during the 1999-2010 time period.Please see the Geographic Coverage section below for specific information on the coverage area and acquisition dates for this data package. Details on this system and the data processing are also below in the Methods and Sampling section of this metadata page.This dataset was originally uploaded to Oceanspaces (http://oceanspaces.org/) in 2013 as part of the North Central Coast baseline monitoring program. In 2022 this dataset was uploaded to the California Ocean Protection Council Data Repository by Mike Esgro ([e-mail]) and Rani Gaddam ([e-mail]). The Persistence classification products in ERDAS Imagine (.img) format for each USGS orthoquad region have been included in this dataset.
