In this study we analysed whether eukaryotic 18S signals could be found in human placental tissue. We also spiked several samples with different concentrations of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Plasmodium falciparum and Toxoplasma gondii. We only detected human 18S reads and the signals derived from the spiked positive controls. No other relevant signals were detected; all other signals were reagent contamination derived as their signal size was far below the equivalent of 1 CFU as determined by the positive control calibration curves.
