The political system, personal topics and the economy. These were the main topics discussed by Italian political leaders on social media in 2018. By contrast, an analysis of their posts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter during the first months of 2018 showed that rights and security were not among the trend topics. This mix of political debate and personal matters gives an idea on how social media are breaking down barriers between the public and those in power, according to common opinions reported in this survey. Social media as source of information for journalists Apart from the content shared by political leaders, statements on social networks can be used as a source of information. In Italy, 47 percent of journalists answering a poll in 2016 stated that Facebook was one of their main sources of information, and 36 percent of them indicated to use Twitter as well. Social media as news source for users Social media are an essential part of the daily media diet of Italian users who want to stay informed. In a survey conducted in 2017, 45 percent of respondents affirmed to browse on social networks every day. The share of respondents using newspapers as information source was lower, 17 percent.
