Alcohol use disorders in South African outpatient treatment setting

This dataset was collected as part of a PhD study titled "The design of an outpatient harm reduction intervention for the management of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) in South Africa," which employed a mixed methods approach. Quantitative data was gathered from sixty service providers working in outpatient substance use treatment settings, focusing on their demographic profiles, professional registration, awareness and training in various treatment models (including harm reduction), and perceptions of alcohol-related harms and intervention readiness. The data includes descriptive statistics and inferential analyses exploring associations between variables such as harm reduction awareness, gender, professional background, and years of experience. In parallel, qualitative data was obtained from service users to explore their alcohol consumption patterns, awareness of treatment options, social and emotional drivers of use, neglected life roles, support systems, and challenges faced during and after treatment. Together, these complementary datasets offer a comprehensive understanding of the current gaps and opportunities in the treatment of AUDs, serving as a foundation for the development of a locally responsive outpatient harm reduction intervention.
