Characterisation of ventricular septation during cardiac development to better understand ventricular septal defects

In this study, we performed a systematic morphological and molecular characterization of the process of ventricular septation during heart development describing both tissue and ECM dynamics. We identified that the absence of endocardial touchdown formation in the septal region, critical for trabecular myocardium organization in the ventricular chambers, may explain the different myocardial architecture of the septal myocardium. Our study identified the critical role of the Notch1 pathway in the control of IVS morphogenesis and characterised the specific VSD associated with its dysregulation. Also, we uncovered a distinct population that might be driving septal growth.
