Data and model diagnostics for "Plant and insect communities in recently rewetted mires differ from those in drained and intact peatlands"

ESM1-2: Datasets of plants and insects inventories collected for the research study: "Plant and insect communities in recently rewetted mires differ from those in drained and intact peatlands". This study was carried out at six peatland complexes located in the coastal region of northern Sweden. Sampling took place between 11 June and 4 July 2024. At each sampling point, the cover of plants and the number of ants and epigaeic beetles were systematically assessed using 2 m x 2m quadrats and pitfall traps, respectively. ESM3-4: Diagnostics plots for generalized linear mixed models from package glmmTMB (McGillycuddy et al. 2025) used in the research study: "Plant and insect communities in recently rewetted mires differ from those in drained and intact peatlands". Model quality was assessed by visually and statistically scrutinizing the distribution of simulated residuals with package DHARMa (Hartig and Hartig 2017). The response variables were the observed species numbers of plants, ants or beetles, and the observed cover or abundance of selected taxa. Species number was modelled using a Poisson distribution, plant cover with an ordered Beta distribution (Kubinec 2023) and insect abundance with a negative binomial. Treatment, distance to ditch, their interaction and study site were included as linear predictors.
