Strains CIP 55.13T and CIP 55.9 formed a single distinct branch with C. youngae as the most closely related species, based on the phylogenetic analysis of sequences of genes fusA, pyrG, rpoB and leuS. Average nucleotide identity between CIP 55.13T and CIP 55.9 was 94.5% with Citrobacter youngae and Citrobacter freundii. Biochemical characteristics supported the fact that the two isolates represented a separate species. Based on phenotypic and genotypic results, strains CIP 55.13T and CIP 55.9 represent a novel species for which the name Citrobacter pasteurii sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is CIP 55.13T
