This dataset supports the article "Wildfires of War: Needs for Revising Fire Governance in a Changing World". It presents spatial data on war-induced land cover changes in southern Ukraine, focusing on cropland abandonment around the 2023 frontline, west of Zaporizhzhia. The dataset includes 9 georeferenced raster layers (GeoTIFF format), each representing annual land cover assessment results. File names follow the structure YEAR_EPSG_4326.tif, where YEAR corresponds to the year of assessment. These rasters are based on satellite-derived classifications and document the progressive loss of agricultural land use and the accumulation of unmanaged vegetation — key factors contributing to increased wildfire risk in conflict-affected areas. Data relevance:The data highlights the indirect impacts of war on wildfire regimes, namely through fuel accumulation due to cropland abandonment and collapse of land management. These insights are critical for researchers, policymakers, and humanitarian actors addressing fire governance under crisis conditions.
