<P>Typescript letter signed Daniel Cox Fahey, Jr., acting executive officer, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, to Mr. Gerry Eppley, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland. Letter states in part, ". . . . I have been in St. Louis since the latter part of June on the planning and construction of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, which is a memorial dedicated to Thomas Jefferson and others who had to do with the westward movement in this country. The work here entails the acquisition of about thirty-seven city blocks along the Mississippi River on the location of the site of the original city. We will acquire the property, demolish the now existing buildings, prepare the plans and direct the construction under the National Park Service of which this office is a part. . . . Unfortunately, certain politically-minded individuals are attempting to publicize this work as an unnecessary New Deal extravagance. . . .We are proposing as components of this memorial two museums: one a museum having to do with the fur industry of this country in which the City of St. Louis has always taken the lead. . . . The second architectural museum would be a Museum of American Architecture in which a comprehensive history of the building activities and styles in this country could be chronologically arranged and exhibited. . . ."</P>
