The objective of this study is to isolate and characterize a new strain of wild edible oyster mushroom, specifically Pleurotus ostreatus strain ASUPre1-1, which grows on conifers. This marks the first recorded instance of Pleurotus ostreatus found on loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) in Mississippi, USA. This research is significant because it offers small-scale farmers the opportunity to utilize wood waste from pine thinning to cultivate oyster mushrooms, providing a fresh food source that can help address food insecurity.
