Beyond the Ambulance: What are the types of practice-based learning models being used by UK Pre-Registration Paramedics Education providers

Open Access Data - abstract Background: Practice-Based Learning (PrBL) environments struggle with demand from increasing student numbers and persistent workforce shortages. This means diversification of how PrBL is designed is required for sustainable learning. There is a current lack of evidence regarding diversity of practice in UK paramedic education. Aim: Explore the current practices of UK Pre-Registration Paramedic education programmes in relation to practice-based learning (PrBL). Methods: A multi-method approach of anonymous survey and extraction of published data from UK education programme websites. Data was collected on the models of PrBL design and supervision. Findings: Diverse PrBL models were evident but limited. There is evidence of simulated and project-based placements and different types of student supervision, but the data is limited and unclear with regards to what education providers are doing. Conclusions: Paramedic PrBL shows a predominance of time in frontline ambulance services. Innovation is occurring; however, this is not well evidenced.
