Process failures in anaerobic digestion due to organic overloading can cause the anaerobic digesters to stall completely and the digester recovery period to take a long time, inflicting higher operation and process cost and increasing its environmental impact. In this study, we have shown the application of an acclimatized microbial consortium for bioaugmentation and recovery of anaerobic digesters suffering from process failure owing to acidosis and substrate overloading. Combining the practical performance of the reactors with the microbial communities' change (both bacterial and archaea), This study gives a good explanation of the role of each microbial group during process failure due to overloading as well as during recovery of the failed digesters.
