Total mRNA from the eukaryotic community (>5µm) of the surface mixed layer at Station ALOHA was sequenced from three samples during the summer of 2012. To understand the underlying functional group specific metabolism associated with blooms, three DSW incubation experiments simulating nutrient-loading events and modeled after McAndrew et al. (2007)4 were performed in conjunction with each of the 60 L in situ samples. Surface water (25 m) was amended with a 10% mixture by volume of water from below the nutricline (700 m) and incubated for seven days.
