Enrichment culturing of Candidatus Manganitrophus morganii strains

We established manganese-oxidizing enrichment cultures in vitro using materials from an iron oxide mat, Santa Barbara, CA, USA and a manganese oxide containing rock surface, Boetsap, Northern Cape, South Africa. The enrichment cultures were analyzed using partial 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and metagenomic sequencing. The most abundant species in the enrichment cultures were two different strains of the same species, Candidatus Manganitrophus morganii. Strain SA1 was from South Africa enrichment. Strain SB1 was from Santa Barbara enrichment.
