Historical Sample of the Netherlands (HSN). Data Set Heights and Life Courses

For the ‘Giants of the Modern World’-project the HSN was enriched with data from conscription records. As only men were subject to conscription, 10,367 male HSN RPs were successfully linked to their conscription record. From this group, 8,418 RPs had a height registered from their first examination. In total, 4,103 HSN RPs who had a known conscription height are also part of the <a href="https://doi.org/10.34894/3UANFM">HSN Life Course Release 2010.01</a>.

The database was built by the Historical Sample of the Netherlands, International Institute of Social History and directed by Kees Mandemakers. The project "Giants of the modern world: A new history of heights and health in the Netherlands, 1811-1940" consisted of Björn Quanjer, Kristina Thompson, Jan Kok, and France Portrait.
