Share of area occupied by hardwoods (> 3 m)

Land cover is defined as ‘physical and biological coverage of the land area, including artificial surfaces, agricultural areas, forests, (semi-) natural areas, wetlands and water bodies’ (European INSPIRE Directive 2007/2/EC, 2007). The land cover therefore corresponds to what is covered by the land, what is found in it: a wood, a culture, a building, a public building. These are the biophysical characteristics of the soil. It must be distinguished from its use, which specifies the function or use of a type of occupation. Thus, land use that would be ‘herbaceous cover’ could correspond to several uses such as a residential garden or pasture. More information on this distinction “[\ 2] (\ 1)” This sheet concerns indicators which provide information on land cover based on airborne data for 2018, namely: Share of surface area occupied by artificial buildings above ground Share of surface area occupied by artificial floor covering Share of surface area occupied by the rail network Share of surface area occupied by bare soils Share of surface area occupied by surface water — Share of area occupied by a rotating herbaceous cover in the year — Share of area occupied by herbaceous cover all year round — Share of area occupied by Feuillus (> 3 m) — Share of area occupied by Feuillus (≤ 3 m) — Share of surface area occupied by Residents (> 3 m) — Share of surface area occupied by Residents (≤ 3 m) These indicators were produced from the land cover mapping carried out as part of the Wallonie Occupation and Use of Sol (WALOUS) research grant awarded by the Walloon Region to a consortium of two universities (UCLouvain, ULB) and a public UAP research centre (ISSeP).
