Vaginally-delivered neonatal piglets were used to explore the impact of prebiotic supplementation of formula milk on the development of the intestinal microbiome. Neonatal piglets were randomized to receive formula milk (FORM, n=8), formula milk supplemented with 2 g/L each galactooligosaccharides and polydextrose (F+GP, n=9) or a sow-reared (SOW, n=12) reference group for 19 days. Culture-independent methods were used to perform a broad characterization of the ileal and colonic bacterial microbiome. Specifically, identifying bacterial taxa stimulated by the selected prebiotics.
