DENTRO: an improved dataset for an improved web tool Introduction In recent years, a growing interest in agroforestry systems has been observed in Belgium and the Netherlands. Therefore, it is important to pay sufficient attention to the tree species selection process as this plays a major role in whether the agroforestry project is successful or not. Climate change causes longer periods of (long-term) drought or heavy rainfall which can affect tree growth. This is why it is important that tree species fit the farmer’s field conditions and can handle well with (extreme) weather conditions occurring in the local region. This is why we developed DENTRO, a tree species selection tool of Agroforestry Flanders, in the first place. New version of DENTRO In the previous version of DENTRO, the dataset was called ‘’DENTRO Tree Matrix’’ (EN) or ‘’DENTRO Bomenmatrix’’ (NL). This dataset contained information about how ~80 tree species match certain relevant parameters varying from abiotic conditions (e.g. soil, weather, light, etc.), animals, objectives (e.g. wood/fruit/nut production and ecological function), and feasibility (e.g. disease risks and planting material availability). Now, we improved DENTRO by, among other things, adding more tree species and parameters including “climate scores” and translating the tool into English. As the KU Leuven published a study on climate trees including a useful dataset containing 254 tree species (Desie et al., 2024), this dataset was merged with the Tree Matrix dataset. At the moment, DENTRO contains 334 species and cultivars combined. Objective The objective of DENTRO is to guide users in selecting tree and shrub species matching the users’ site conditions and goals. While using DENTRO, the user gains knowledge about tree characteristics, and the effect of a species suitability to certain site and climatic conditions. At the end, the user can generate a summarizing report that compiles the selected species along with the relevant parameters. The latter is useful for comparing different scenarios.
