Tropical Cyclone (TC) best-track data was previously available as separate storm track datasets maintained by various agencies. IBTrACS consolidates these datasets into a unified global TC database. Its core objective is to address data availability challenges: through direct collaboration with all Regional Specialized Meteorological Centers (RSMCs), other international centers, and individual researchers, IBTrACS develops a global best-track dataset by integrating storm information from multiple centers into a single product, and archives the data for public use. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Tropical Cyclone Programme has approved IBTrACS as the official archive and distribution resource for TC best-track data. IBTrACS hosts the most comprehensive global historical collection of tropical cyclones, combining data from numerous TC datasets. It streamlines inter-agency comparisons by providing storm data from multiple sources in a single centralized location, offers data in widely adopted formats to facilitate analytical research, conducts quality checks on storm inventories, track positions, central pressures, and maximum sustained wind speeds, and delivers the curated information to end users. By making TC best-track data accessible in a centralized repository, IBTrACS supports research into understanding the global distribution, frequency, and intensity of tropical cyclones. The primary mission of IBTrACS is to support scientific research endeavors.
