A Response to Patricia Churchland (2): When the Hand Moves to Say I Exist The Case of Jahi McMath and the Challenge of Reducing the Mind to the Brain

Reductive materialism claims that the mind is located in the brain, and that the nervous system is responsible for every voluntary and involuntary action. If the mind has ceased, how can the body continue to grow and respond? How can a corpse, declared dead, grow, reach puberty, listen, and move its hand in response to a call? This thesis collides with the case of Jahi McMath, the child who was declared brain-dead and then responded to her mother’s commands. The research poses a question: If the mind is in the brain and the brain is dead, where does involuntary action reside? And how do we explain the conscious response that says, in silence: I exist? The research presents a tripartite analytical framework: (B) the somatic-neural executive dimension, (F) the higher regulatory function (inner sovereignty), and (Nf) the narrative and existential trace. It moves from Jahi’s case to an additional proof consisting of three cases: the deaf-mute where (F) finds the hand instead of the voice, Stephen Hawking where (F) finds the cheek instead of the body, and Jahi McMath where (F) finds the finger after the brain itself has died. These cases establish a principle: (F) is not imprisoned in a brain region, but is a sovereignty that searches for any available (B) pathway. When the brain dies, (F) does not die; it finds another channel. The Argument in a Compressed Form Materialism says: mind = brain. And the brain is a part of (B). Fine. We accept this. But (B) is not the brain alone. (B) is the entire system: brain + nerves + muscles + hormones + the autonomic system. If the brain dies, half of (B) dies. The other half of (B) continued to grow, respond, and complete puberty. The killer question: If (F) is inside (B), which half of (B) contains (F)? The dead half? Then why did the response continue? The living half? Then (F) is not specifically in the brain, but in a wider system. Methodological Conclusion: The conscious response is not merely a neural act, but an existential declaration. Materialism sees the machine and does not see who presses the button. This research does not ask the reader to believe in (F), but asks: If the brain is everything, why does the corpse respond to commands? The question itself is the beginning of (F).
