Safe-ZnO-BioPack: Safety assessment of a sustainable nanocellulose packaging system incorporating a nanocomposite combining zinc oxide, olive leaf extract, and pine resin

Safe-ZnO-BioPack is a METROFOOD-BE service provision use case in which Sciensano supports the safety assessment of a biodegradable nanocellulose-based food packaging system containing ZnO nanoparticles, olive leaf extract and pine resin. The project generates data on nanoparticle distribution, morphology and size through electron microscopy, together with chemical and migration data on zinc and ZnO release using ICP-MS/ICP-OES-based workflows. The dataset collection supports metrology-driven characterisation, food contact material safety assessment and the development of sustainable packaging solutions.
