Stentor pyriformis are giant, unicellular ciliates that harbor an algal endosymbiont that we have identified as Chlorella variabilis. These organisms are a new model system for mixotrophy in ciliates, which has primarily been studied in Paramecium bursaria and its endosymbiont, also Chlorella variabilis. Understanding the similarities and differences between the genomes in these endosymbioses will ultimately aid our understanding of the evolution of mixotrophy, endosymbiosis, and organelle fixation.
Methods
Samples were sequenced with an Oxford Nanopore MinION or GridION. Draft assemblies and annotation information can be found at https://stentor.ciliate.org/, and are described in the associated preprint.
