NRS-4919 | Infantile statistics

This volume (probably one of a series) represents the daily record of the two trained nurses entrusted with the duty of visiting mothers of new born infants in the city and inner suburban area (Redfern, Alexandria, Waterloo, Mascot, Botany, Glebe, Newtown, Erskineville, Annandale, Leichhardt, and Balmain) and advising them on the care of their children's health and associated problems. The fore-runners of the Department of Child Welfare and of the Baby Health Centre System, the first of these nurses (Mrs Blanche E. Day) was appointed in 1909 and the second (Miss C.M. Burne) in 1912. They were appointed on the recommendation of the Board of Health after strong representations had been made to the Government by Dr D.G. Armstrong (City Health Officer) who had set up a similar service run by the Sydney City Council in 1904. The statistics on the feeding, sex, age, legitimacy, housing and general care of babies contained in this volume were summarized in the reports of the Director General of Public Health laid before Parliament from the inception of the Public Health Department in 1913.
