Hydromorphology of rivers
Alteration of the morphology of watercourses is one of the main obstacles to the good environmental status of aquatic environments. If this essential factor is not taken into account in the restoration programmes, there is a risk that the restoration of the biological quality of the watercourses covered by the European framework directive will not be achieved. The OFB is leading the conduct of a diagnosis and the implementation of a national monitoring of the morphology of watercourses. The identification of the alterations that have the greatest impact on aquatic environments and the identification of pressure sources will make it possible to recommend conservation and restoration measures. Mapping and field data are collected in a national data bank and cross-referenced with information on the status of biological populations present in rivers. The aim is to establish a link between population status, habitat degradation and morphological alteration on a larger scale.
