Protest Surveys: G20 Summit Protests. Two Demonstrations in Hamburg 2017

Since 2003, researchers associated with the Institute for the Study of Protest and Social Movements (Institut für Protest- und Bewegungsforschung, ipb, http://protestinstitut.eu) have conducted surveys at demonstrations. This study is part of this ongoing series. The aim of the study is to gain insights into the composition and attitudes of participants at two demonstrations during the G20 summit in Hamburg in July 2017. The focus is particularly on socio-demographic characteristics, political attitudes of the respondents encountered at the demonstration, and their evaluation of the G20 meeting and issues of global justice. The two demonstrations took place on July 2nd (“G20 Protestwelle”) and July 8th (“Grenzenlose Solidarität statt G20!”) in Hamburg and marked the beginning and the end of the week of protest activities surrounding the G20 summit. According to the organizers, 25,000 people participated at the demonstration on July 2nd. The research team estimated the actual number with 8,000 participants significantly lower. At the demonstration on July 8th between 50,000 (according to the police) and 70,000 (according to the organizers) participated.. The questionnaire consisted of 35 questions. It was available in two languages: German and English. In order to allow for comparison with earlier protest surveys, the questionnaire relied on questions used in earlier questionnaires of the ipb. The questionnaire consists of the following groups of questions: • Motivation: open question about the motivation to take part in the demonstration • Protest mobilization: knowledge about the demonstration, mobilization network • G20: evaluation of the G20 • Political activity: Membership in civil society organizations, past protest activity, forms of action • Political attitudes: evaluation of democracy, trust in institutions, self-placement on the political spectrum, party affiliation, voting tendency • Sociodemographic questions: gender, year of birth, education, occupation Seit 2003 führen Forscher des Instituts für Protest- und Bewegungsforschung (Institut für Protest- und Bewegungsforschung, ipb, http://protestinstitut.eu) Umfragen bei Demonstrationen durch. Diese Studie ist Teil dieser fortlaufenden Reihe. Ziel der Studie ist es, Einblicke in die Zusammensetzung und Einstellungen der Teilnehmer*innen zweier Demonstrationen während des G20-Gipfels im Juli 2017 in Hamburg zu gewinnen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt insbesondere auf soziodemografischen Merkmalen, politischen Einstellungen der bei der Demonstration angetroffenen Befragten und ihrer Bewertung des G20-Treffens und von Fragen der globalen Gerechtigkeit. Die beiden Demonstrationen fanden am 2. Juli („G20 Protestwelle”) und am 8. Juli („Grenzenlose Solidarität statt G20!”) in Hamburg statt und markierten den Beginn und das Ende der Protestwoche rund um den G20-Gipfel. Nach Angaben der Organisatoren nahmen 25.000 Menschen an der Demonstration am 2. Juli teil. Das Forschungsteam schätzte die tatsächliche Zahl mit 8.000 Teilnehmern deutlich niedriger ein. An der Demonstration am 8. Juli nahmen zwischen 50.000 (laut Polizei) und 70.000 (laut Organisatoren) Personen teil. Der Fragebogen umfasste 35 Fragen. Er war in zwei Sprachen verfügbar: Deutsch und Englisch. Um einen Vergleich mit früheren Protestumfragen zu ermöglichen, stützte sich der Fragebogen auf Fragen, die bereits in früheren Fragebögen des ipb verwendet wurden. Der Fragebogen besteht aus folgenden Fragengruppen: • Motivation: offene Frage zur Motivation, an der Demonstration teilzunehmen • Protestmobilisierung: Wissen über die Demonstration, Mobilisierungsnetzwerk • G20: Bewertung des G20-Gipfels • Politische Aktivität: Mitgliedschaft in zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen, bisherige Protestaktivitäten, Aktionsformen • Politische Einstellungen: Bewertung der Demokratie, Vertrauen in Institutionen, Selbsteinstufung auf dem politischen Spektrum, Parteizugehörigkeit, Wahlverhalten • Soziodemografische Fragen: Geschlecht, Geburtsjahr, Bildung, Beruf
