A two-dimensional Co(II) complex [Co<sub>2</sub>(BPDC)<sub>2</sub>(TMIB)·H<sub>2</sub>O·DMA]<sub>n</sub> (<b>1</b>) (TMIB = 1,3,5-tris(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)benzene, H<sub>2</sub>BPDC = 2-(4-carboxybenzoyl)benzoic acid) has been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermogravimetric analyses. <b>1</b> is a two-dimensional layer based on [Co(BPDC)]<sub>n</sub> chains. The solid-state photoluminescence properties and photocatalytic properties for degradation of methylene blue (MB) of <b>1</b> were further investigated.
