Modal share of public transportation in EU countries 2011-2021

The share of trips made by public transport dropped in all European Union (EU) countries in 2020 and remained low in 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns and travel restrictions. Prior to the pandemic, around 17.5 percent of inland passenger transport trips were made by public transportation. In 2019, Hungary had the largest share of trips made by public transportation in the EU, while Lithuania recorded the lowest modal share at 9.4 percent.
