BAT006 - Batta - Basic vocabulary (Speaker: Septinus Mde)

This dataset contains elicited basic vocabulary from Batta with Septinus Mde (born 1952), a native speaker of Batta. All words were recorded in isolation, utterance-final, and utterance-medial context; they cover the semantic domains of landscape, plants, animals, humans, verbs, numerals, qualities, and cultural items. The primary purpose of this recording was for use in systematic phonetic investigations on the realisation of the intrinsic fundamental frequency of vowels in Batta. The session was recorded on 11 December 2019, in Yenenas village (Batanta island, Raja Ampat regency, Southwest Papua province, Indonesia). The recording of this session is split across three audio files, BAT006-01, BAT006-02, and BAT006-03; TextGrids (for use in Praat) are also provided. This dataset relates to the British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship 'Synchronic and diachronic investigations in Raja Ampat-South Halmahera, a little-known subbranch of Austronesian' (PF19\100004); additional fieldwork funds were provided by a Moray Endowment Grant from the University of Edinburgh.
