<p>This study consists of two components: a self-administered questionnaire and an interview. The questionnaire collected information on farm family household composition, on- and off-farm employment patterns, family income and finances, farm enterprise patterns, perceived problems and education needs, and attitudes toward farming. The survey sample was drawn by the Crop Reporting staff of the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. The sample was selected to reflect the gross sales range categories of New York farm units with dross sale $10,000 or more. The questionnaires were mailed in February 1986, with a 49% response rate. Interviews from 30 families were completed one year after the original survey mailing.</p>
