Colección de Ictiología Universidad de Antioquia

Around the world, there are 37,273 fish species (Fricke, Eschmeyer and Fong, 2025). Colombian fishes are nearly 4,298 fish species (SiB Colombia, 2025); representing by 1,328 in the Caribbean Ocean (Acero, Polanco and Tavera, 2019), 881 in the Pacific Ocean (Beltran and Tavera, 2019) and 1,716 freshwather mainly in the basins of Amazonas and Orinoco rivers (DoNascimiento et al, 2024).
The Knowledge about the richness of fishes species comes mainly from regional research, monitoring associated with environmental permissions for infrastructure construction of energy projects, field courses and curriculum reports to the community. Witnesses of this diversity are deposited in Biological Collections, usually administered by institutions of higher education or research institutes. In Colombia, Registro Único Nacional de Colecciones (2025) reports 281 biological collections, the most important not only for its geographical representation but also by their size are the National Institute of Natural Sciences at the National University of Colombia and the Museum of Alexander von Humboldt Institute.
Ichthyology collection of the University of Antioquia (CIUA) emerged as a repository of specimens collected in several research projects done by the group of Ichthyology (GIUA) since 2002. Initially, became part of the collection of Limnology (CLUA) but in 2008 it was registered in the Alexander von Humboldt Institute Museums database. Since then, (CIUA) is in charge of the curatorship of fish specimens not only from the ichthyologic research at the University of Antioquia but also from other research, monitoring of consulting firms that deliver the material collected in their work also community donations. Here, we made a report about information contained in CIUA Fish Museum.
Now, this resource has 8,836 records that have been collected in Colombian territory from 1972 to 2025. With a taxonomic coverage of three class, 26 orders, 90 families, 240 genus and 476 species.

Alrededor del mundo existen 37.273 especies de peces (Fricke, Eschmeyer y Fong, 2025). Los peces de Colombia son cerca de 4.298 especies (SiB Colombia, 2025); representadas por 1.328 en el Océano Caribe (Acero, Polanco y Tavera, 2019), 881 en el Océano Pacífico (Beltrán y Tavera, 2019) y 1.716 de agua dulce, principalmente en las cuencas de los ríos Amazonas y Orinoco (DoNascimiento et al., 2024).
El conocimiento sobre la riqueza de especies de peces proviene principalmente de investigaciones regionales, monitoreos asociados a permisos ambientales para la construcción de proyectos de infraestructura energética, cursos de campo e informes de cátedra a la comunidad. Testigos de esta diversidad están depositados en colecciones biológicas, usualmente administradas por instituciones de educación superior o institutos de investigación. En Colombia, el Registro Único Nacional de Colecciones (2025) reporta 281 colecciones biológicas; las más importantes, no solo por su representación geográfica sino también por su tamaño, son el Instituto de Ciencias Naturales de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia y el Museo del Instituto de Investigación de Recursos Biológicos Alexander von Humboldt.
La Colección Ictiológica de la Universidad de Antioquia (CIUA) surgió como un repositorio de ejemplares recolectados en diversos proyectos de investigación realizados por el Grupo de Ictiología (GIUA) desde 2002. Inicialmente hizo parte de la Colección de Limnología (CLUA), pero en 2008 fue registrada en la base de datos de museos del Instituto Alexander von Humboldt. Desde entonces, la CIUA está a cargo de la curaduría de ejemplares de peces no solo provenientes de la investigación ictiológica en la Universidad de Antioquia, sino también de otros proyectos de investigación, monitoreos de empresas consultoras que entregan el material recolectado en sus trabajos, así como donaciones de la comunidad. Aquí presentamos un informe acerca de la información contenida en el Museo de Peces CIUA. Ahora, este recurso tiene 8,836 registros que han sido colectados en el territorio colombiano desde 1972 hasta 2025. Con una cobertura taxonómica de tres clases, 26 órdenes, 90 familias, 240 géneros y 476 especies.
