Translation (Rita Seng Mai) Once upon a time, there was a boy named Shan Tang. He kept thinking about why he was poor. He always thought about it while lying in bed. Then he got an idea, "Now I know why. I remember that an old grandpa who knows how to read palms lives in the nine mountains." He had a thought. The next morning, he got up early and went there. After three days and nights, he arrived at a place where a man grew pears. He arrived and became a guest there. The old man asked him, "My grandson, where are you going?" He answered, "I am going to see the old grandpa beyond the nine mountains to have my future read." The old man who grew pears said to him, "Then ask that old man for me, too. Ask him why my pear trees aren't bearing fruit although they have plenty of leaves." The boy said, "Okay, I will ask him about it." Then he continued his journey. He arrived at a village. There was a house that had a beautiful lady there. He stayed as a guest at the old man's house, who had a daughter. The old man asked him, "Boy, where are you going? Where will you go?" He said, "Grandpa, my fortune is getting worse. There's an old grandpa living beyond the nine mountains who knows how to read palms. I am going to him to ask about my future." The old man said to him, "Then I want to request one thing. My daughter is already eighteen years old, but she doesn't speak a word. Please ask him why she doesn't speak at all." Shan Tang said, "Okay." Then he continued his journey. After walking for seven days and nights, he arrived at a big river. There was a huge turtle there. The boy wanted to cross to the other side of the river, but he couldn't because the water was rising. He found a female turtle. The turtle asked him, "Where are you going?" He answered, "I want to know about my future, so I am going to the old man who knows how to read palm." The turtle said, "I think because of this thing on my back, I don't know why I can't fly. I want to know the reason. I want to fly in the sky. Please ask him why I can't fly. I will send you to the other side of the river." Shan Tang rode on the turtle's back and crossed the river. He continued his journey and soon arrived at the nine mountains. An old man with a long beard was sitting there. When he arrived there, the old man asked him, "Why are you here? This is a place where no one comes. Why do you come to me?" Shan Tang said, "Grandpa, I came here to ask you why I've been so poor my whole life." The old man said to him, "You can ask me only three questions." The boy thought to himself, "Should I ask about myself, or should I ask about what they asked me to?" The old man said, "I don't want to listen to many words. Just ask me three questions." Then he thought, "I'll just ask what they asked me to ask." He decided not to ask about himself. He asked, "Grandpa, why do the pear trees grow so many leaves but never bear fruit?" The old man answered, "It is because there is a gold pot under the tree. That's why it doesn't bear fruits." The boy kept it in mind. Then he asked him, "Grandpa, there is a lady who is already eighteen years old and hasn't spoken a single word since she was born. Why is that?" The old man answered, "When she finds a man she truly loves, she will speak at that time." Then the boy asked him, "Grandpa, why doesn't the turtle fly into the sky?" The old man said, "There are two rubies in the turtle's neck. If she can spit them out, she will be able to fly." The boy went back the way he came. He arrived at the turtle first. The turtle asked him, "Did you ask him what I told you to ask?" He said, "Yes, I did." She said, "What did he say?" He said, "There are two rubies in your neck. If you can spit one of them out, you will be able to fly." The turtle thought about spitting out both rubies, not just one. She gave him the two rubies that were stuck in her neck. Shan Tang got both rubies. The turtle got wings and could fly. Then he continued on his way home. He arrived at the house of the man whose eighteen-year-old daughter had never spoken. When the girl saw him, she said, "Shan Tang is back." The father was surprised to hear his daughter speak. He asked Shan Tang, "Did you ask what I told you to?" Shan Tang said, "Yes, I did. Your daughter will speak when she meets the person she loves." The old man said, "She will speak when she meets the man she loves. That's you. My daughter hasn't spoken a word in her life. She speaks when she sees you. You two are a match made in heaven. Be with my daughter." He arranged the wedding for them. Shan Tang got a wife. After that, they set off on their journey home. They arrived at the man who owned the pear trees. The man asked him, "Did you ask what I requested you to ask?" Shan Tang said, "Yes, I did." The man said, "What did he say?" Shan Tang said, "Grandpa, the reason your pear tree doesn't bear any fruit is that there is a gold pot buried beneath it." The old man was bad and didn't want to give that gold to Shan Tang, so he said, "I see." They just went back home. The man who owned the pear trees thought to himself, "He said there is a gold pot beneath this tree. I will dig it out." When he dug beneath the tree, he found two gold pots. He was happy with the thought, "I am rich!" When he opened it, there were small snakes inside it. He was so shocked. He was mean-hearted, so he put the lid back on the pot and placed it in Shan Tang and his wife's room, with the intent to harm them. When Shan Tang and his wife came back, they saw a pot there. They were curious and opened it. Then they discovered that it was filled with gold. The old man was secretly watching them. He told them, "When I opened it, there were only snakes inside. But when you open it, there's only gold!" Shan Tang told him, "It's because you are mean! That old grandpa told you to share it with me, but you don't believe me and don't want to give me anything." The old man regretted his action.
